The selection of four iconic photographs features a rockin’ Carl Perkins with his backing band, a Gretsch-wielding Eddie Cochran, a simply stunning Wanda Jackson plus a fresh-faced Johnny Burnette, minus the rest of his family.
In our latest Vintage Rock Presents special edition, we celebrate all things Rockabilly. One of music’s great survivors, it retains its strong health, preserved by the passion of its fans across all corners of the globe.
We open proceedings with three of the genre’s red-hot legends and features on the Carl Perkins, The King of Rockabilly, the raucous legacy of Johnny Burnette and The Rock ’n Roll Trio, together with tragic rocker Eddie Cochran.
There is also a tribute to the woman of rockabilly with Wanda Jackson (The First Lady of Rockabilly), Sparkle Moore (The Female Elvis) and Rose Maddox combining to make a formidable trio.
Then there are the unsung legends of the genre, with Charlie Feathers, Ersel Hickey, and Billy Lee Riley vying for a place in the spotlight. Feathers was known for his energetic, hiccupping vocal style, but for the most part, his musical career went largely under the radar. It was a similar story for the pioneering Hickey, who is best known for his timeless pose. Finally, there’s Billy Lee, who had all the moves but failed to catch a big break.
Elsewhere there’s a look back at the roots of Rockabilly, the music that came down from the hills to unite country music with rhythm & blues, together with an A-Z of Rockabilly plus The Top 50 Greatest Rockabilly Tracks of all time.
